Koi Baat Chale is a play that tells the story of the lives, complexities, failures and small joys of simple ordinary people, which in a certain sense, are not so small at all. For me, this is a tragic-comedy. I am quite influenced by Chekov and it is possible that you may find echoes of his or Dostoevsky’s characters in the play. Finally, this is a love story that is not comic in any way.
The Play
Koi Baat Chale, a romantic
comedy, revolves around the protagonist Kanhiya Lal Bansi Prasad. He is
thirty-five years old, unmarried, and is a drama teacher in school. The play
shows Bansi seeking the services of a marriage bureau to help him find a
suitable life partner. Searching for his soul mate, Bansi meets Supriya while entering
the same marriage bureau that he has approached. Greatly attracted to her, he
describes her to Pyare Lal, the owner of the bureau, when asked about his
preferences, making a special mention of the beautiful black mole on the left
cheek right below the ear, similar to what he had seen on Supriya's face.
Pyare
Lal introduces Bansi to many girls with a mole on their cheek, except Supriya.
Bansi, who has set his heart on marrying Supriya, rejects all candidates and
finally decides to propose to her. How Bansi expresses his feelings to Supriya
is what Koi Baat Chale is all about.
